The Norton Motorcycle Company is a brand of motorcycles headquartered in Solihull, West Midlands (initially based in Birmingham), England. For a few years, around 1990, North American financiers held the right to use the name on motorcycles.
The business was established in 1898 as a "Fittings and Parts manufacturer for the two-wheeler trade." By 1902, the Norton Company had begun manufacturing motorcycles with purchased engines. A Norton-built engine was added to the range in 1908. From this, the company started producing single and eventually twin-cylinder motorcycles and a long history of racing participation.
The original company was formed by James Lansdowne Norton in 1898 at 320 Bradford Street, Birmingham. In 1902, Norton began manufacturing motorcycles with French and Swiss engines. In 1907, a Peugeot-engined Norton driven by Rem Fowler won the twin-cylinder class in the first Isle of Man TT race, which began a sporting tradition until the 1960s.
British market received a new 750cc Commando with rubber insulation in 1968. It was the best machine that could be bought that year. They offered an electric starter in 1975, although this technology was available two years before the larger 850cc Commando. Upcoming Norton bikes in India are the Norton 500, Norton Commando 961 Cafe Racer, Norton Dominator, and Norton Commando 961 Sport.
Norton plans an Indian entry, but since their bikes are hand-built, they will be priced much higher than standard bikes in this segment. Also, bringing all these through the CBU route will lead to a massive price increase. The bikes made by Norton around 1940 looked similar to the Harley, Indian, and Royal Enfield bikes of that time.
