For the next generation of bikes powered by the 1290 engine, KTM is developing a one-of-a-kind semi-automatic gearbox. The system should be able to shift entirely independently and with the rider’s input.

KTM can use this patent for the 1290 Super Adventure S, Super Adventure R, 1290 Super Duke R, and 1290 Super Duke GT for the KTM LC8 V-twin.

KTM Motorcycles is working on making its V-twin engine bikes more comfortable to ride for longer durations. For example, the 160 bhp 1290 Super Adventure S has heated grips, TPMS, and adaptive cruise control equipment. According to newly discovered patents, the Austrian brand is developing a new semi-automatic gearbox for its V-twin-engined models.

New KTM semi-automatic gearbox: how does it work?

The centrifugal clutch used in the new KTM semi-automatic gearbox releases the clutch without stopping the bike. This is comparable to MV Agusta’s SCS (Smart Clutch System) model, which includes the Rekluse clutch. Fundamentally, there is still a need to shift gears, and while on the move, you can use the rapid bi-directional shifter to do so; However, if you don’t engage the clutch, the bike will not stop. It’s a very practical feature for slow-moving traffic, and Rekluse also offers clutch kits with a similar capacity for several Harley-Davidson bikes.

Following KTM’s recent acquisition of 25% ownership in MV Agusta, the Austrian manufacturer manages the illustrious Italian brand’s procurement and distribution activities. We expect at least one of the 1290 Super Duke GT and 1290 Super Adventure bikes to be equipped with this new gearbox, as they are designed for longer use, and the new test mules have been doing the rounds for quite some time now.
