How to Apply Brakes On A Motorcycle

A  phrase states, “When a person is behind the wheel of a car or a bike handle, their animal instincts come alive.” Although it could seem like a fun way to show off your driving prowess, it is also a surefire way to end up in the hospital or hurt. Accidents also result from bike users’ lack of knowledge. What button should be depressed first, the clutch or the brake? This is a common thought.

The answer to this question depends on the circumstances surrounding the braking. This includes the brake application’s position, the braking’s cause, the bike’s speed, and the gear in which the bike is operating. Let’s examine four distinct scenarios to better understand the four scenarios to apply brakes on a motorcycle in the right way and decide which component should be used first.

How To Apply Brakes On A Motorcycle

Case 1

In the first scenario, there are circumstances where you might have to completely stop. This is such as when you’re in traffic, or a problem emerges out of nowhere, and you must take action immediately. It’s imperative to apply the clutch before the brake in such circumstances. This method will stop the motorcycle without stalling the engine. The bike may abruptly halt and become unstable, which could knock you off if you use the brake forcefully without first engaging the clutch.

Case 2

In the second scenario, you need to slow down while still on your bike while maintaining a moderate speed. In this situation, you should only apply the brakes to slow down. After breaking down, you can use the clutch to downshift to a lower gear.

Case 3

The third situation is when you need to slow down by 10 to 15 kilometers per hour while riding at 50 to 60 Kmph. There is no need to engage the clutch in this situation. Simply use your motorcycle brakes to gently lower it down, then use the throttle to accelerate it back up to the pace you want. This strategy is helpful when you need to slow down before speeding again.

Case 4

Whether riding on a highway, through a busy neighborhood, or at a fast or low pace, the fourth scenario involves an emergency where you must stop your bike quickly. In these circumstances, you can quickly stop your bike by applying the clutch and brake simultaneously. In these situations, putting your safety first and ignoring concerns about mileage or fuel economy is critical. When riding a bike, being aware and having quick reflexes is necessary.
